The President and the Porn Star

Sounds like the title of the next blockbuster movie or bestseller. You wouldn’t think to associate this headline with our very own Donald. Well, maybe you would. After all it’s not as if much about this beloved or beleaguered President’s behaviour and temperament (depending on which of the polarized factions you belong to) through his campaign and now his presidency hadn’t pointed to the certainty that sooner than later yet another sordid scandal would emerge.

Love or hate him one thing I am beginning to appreciate about the Donald is that he has changed our perception of contemporary politics and politicians perhaps forever. We’ve been forced to put to bed all our preconceived notions about how pristine and scandal-averse the lives of politicians ought to be in order to assume the highest office arguably in the world. This is one president who by virtue of his uniquely idiosyncratic temperament is rewriting all the rules of the political game.

I started off loathing this President who just seemed to delight in being obnoxious and rubbing everyone up the wrong way; except his diehard supporters of course. Now I hold a somewhat reluctant appreciation for the fact that for the first time we are dealing with a political leader who has little time for the niceties we have come to expect with the office and says things exactly as he sees and more importantly believes them, albeit with little finesse, tact or diplomacy. Neither is he afraid to take unpopular stances or decisions and as much as I find so many other aspects of his personality detestable, I will always doff my hat off to the one who remains true to the person they really are; likeable or not.

Everything about the way Trump runs his government can at best be described as chaotic and yet the record on jobs and the economy so far seem rosy. His decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel is in my opinion one of commendable bravery and I will make my reasons known in more subsequent blog posts.

Now, as if our lives have not been sufficiently saturated with the larger than life scandalous conduct of Donald Trump, from extra marital indiscretions, to unacceptable public statements unbefitting of his office, to blatant demonstrations of nepotism, abuse of power and of course non declaration of tax when he had promised he would divulge his tax details; we now have the sordid story of his alleged dalliance with a porn star aka Stormy Daniels. The intricacies of this story just make this whole saga unseemly and distasteful yet nothing this President does seems to make an ounce of difference. Rather we and the world at large are the ones who by virtue of the extent to which his overall conduct has been accommodated, have become increasingly desensitized to however mad, bad and sad Donald Trump’s conduct has been to date or might become in the future.

The presidency of Donald Trump to date only serves to make me appreciate that of Barack Obama the more. Eight years of Barack Obam’’s presidency without a whiff of scandal yet here we have his successor who seems to be living out each day of his presidency from one scandal to the next. I dare not think whether Barack Obama would have lasted six minutes in the White House had he had even one tenth of the scandals that have dogged Donald Trump right from the commencement of his campaign. That’s why we have evolved in to this dangerous state of political apathy in relation to this president’s scandal prone behaviour where we have come to hear so many unpalatable things about Donald Trump that one more scandal only serves to have a diminishing impact on our ability to assess and react to his excesses.

As for the strong evangelical support Trump maintains, I cringe at the hypocrisy even among this group. As an evangelical myself, I feel very much at liberty to turn the spotlight of criticism on them. The fact that everything evangelicals are in the habit of preaching against and holding both themselves and the rest of the world to the gospel standards of good Christian conduct, they seem to have waived all away in relation to Trump on the simple pretext that Trump has been chosen by God. Now I would not presume to lecture God on who he handpicks to fulfil whatever purpose He decides as I do believe that God by virtue of His sovereignty does have the right to do exactly as He pleases (contrary to popular opinion by those who think God was created to think, reason and act like them)!

But if Donald Trump is indeed God’s chosen one for this political season we find ourselves in and as some evangelicals have strongly expressed, then I do think there is no longer much basis for evangelicals to preach to us about standards of behaviour or of needing to exhibit good Christian conduct in our way of living; for the simple truth is that all God has to do is choose us when he pleases and nothing about the way we behave or the way we conduct our lives will have mattered. Donald Trump can do no wrong even when he clearly does and states wrong. By that same token, we all can do no wrong if only we are chosen by God. So, I guess the key thing in life is not about how you live or conduct your life but to just hope that we get chosen by God.However you choose to live your life after that ceases to matter then.

In that case, I rest my case, until my next post that is!

From my heart to yours, always!
